EMDR Therapy

Key Benefits of EMDR Therapy

EMDR therapy, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is a psychotherapy approach that has been proven effective in treating a wide range of psychological issues, such as trauma, PTSD, anxiety, and phobias. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR therapy has gained popularity and recognition as a powerful tool for helping individuals process and heal from past experiences that have been causing distress.

EMDR therapy is a unique and effective psychotherapy approach that has been widely recognized for its ability to help individuals process and heal from past traumas and distressing experiences. By using a combination of bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements or tapping, and guided processing of memories, beliefs, and emotions, EMDR therapy helps clients reprocess these negative experiences in a safe and controlled environment. This reprocessing allows individuals to make new connections and insights, leading to a reduction in symptoms and an overall sense of healing and resolution.

One of the key components of EMDR therapy is the concept of desensitization and reprocessing, which involves identifying and processing past trauma or distressing memories that have been stored in the brain in an unprocessed or dysfunctional way. By guiding clients through the reprocessing of these memories and beliefs, EMDR therapy helps to create new, more adaptive connections in the brain and reduce the emotional and physiological response to these memories. Through this process, clients can experience relief from symptoms, improved cognitive functioning, and a greater sense of empowerment and resilience in dealing with life’s challenges.

Rapid Result

One of the most notable benefits of EMDR therapy is its ability to produce rapid and lasting results. Many clients report feeling significant relief from symptoms after just a few sessions, compared to traditional talk therapy which can take longer to see results.

Effective Treatment for Trauma

EMDR therapy is especially effective in treating trauma and PTSD. By addressing the root cause of traumatic memories and processing them in a safe and controlled setting, clients are able to move past their trauma and experience healing.

Reduced Anxiety and Phobias

EMDR therapy has also been shown to be effective in treating anxiety disorders and phobias. Through the process of reprocessing distressing memories and beliefs, clients can learn to manage their anxiety and fears more effectively.

Improved Self-Esteem and Confidence

EMDR therapy can help clients develop a more positive self-image and increase their self-esteem. By processing negative beliefs and experiences, individuals can gain a greater sense of self-worth and confidence.

Enhanced Cognitive Functioning

EMDR therapy has been found to improve cognitive functioning by helping individuals change negative thought patterns and beliefs. Clients often report feeling clearer, more focused, and better able to cope with stress after completing EMDR therapy.

Emotional Regulation

EMDR therapy can help individuals develop better emotional regulation skills, enabling them to manage intense emotions more effectively and lead a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Brainspotting

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a powerful therapeutic approach that harnesses the brain’s innate ability to heal itself. This innovative technique was developed by Dr. David Grand and is based on the understanding that where you look affects how you feel. By identifying specific points in the visual field, brainspotting allows clients to access and process deep-seated emotional and psychological issues, facilitating profound healing.

How Does It Work?

During a brainspotting session, a trained therapist guides clients to find “brainspots” – particular eye positions that correspond to areas of tension, trauma, or unresolved emotions. As clients focus on these points, they may experience heightened awareness of their inner thoughts and feelings, enabling them to process traumatic memories and reduce distress. This mind-body approach fosters a safe space for exploration, allowing individuals to uncover and release emotional blockages, ultimately leading to greater well-being and resilience. Whether addressing trauma, anxiety, or other mental health challenges, brainspotting is a dynamic pathway toward healing and self-discovery.

What does it Treat?

– Trauma and PTSD: By accessing and processing traumatic memories, brainspotting helps alleviate symptoms and promote healing.

– Anxiety and Depression: This technique can assist in uncovering and processing underlying issues that contribute to anxiety and depressive states, facilitating emotional release and balance.

– Performance Anxiety: Athletes, performers, and professionals can utilize brainspotting to enhance focus, confidence, and performance by addressing mental blocks.

– Grief and Loss: Brainspotting provides a supportive environment to process grief, allowing individuals to confront and integrate their emotions.

– Chronic Pain and Somatic Issues: By targeting the emotional roots of physical pain, brainspotting can promote relief and healing.

The Brainspotting Setup Process

  1. Initial Consultation: The journey begins with an initial consultation, where you and your therapist will discuss your concerns, goals, and any past experiences that may inform the therapy. This allows for a tailored approach that suits your individual needs.
  1. Creating a Safe Space: Your therapist will work to establish a safe and comfortable environment. Building trust is essential to facilitate open exploration of emotions and memories.
  1. Identifying Brainspots: During the session, the therapist will guide you to find specific eye positions—brainspots—that connect to areas of distress or emotional tension. This is typically done through gentle questioning and monitoring your responses.
  1. Processing and Integration: As you focus on these brainspots, you’ll be encouraged to notice thoughts, sensations, and emotions that arise. The therapist supports you in processing these experiences, helping to integrate and release any trapped emotions.
  1. Closure and Reflection: Each session concludes with a period of reflection, allowing you to discuss your experiences and insights. Your therapist will help you integrate these feelings and prepare for the next session.

With brainspotting, you are embarking on a personalized journey of self-discovery and healing, supported every step of the way by your therapist. Take the first step toward transformative change today.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy, also known as marriage or relationship counseling, is a form of psychotherapy designed to help couples improve their relationship and resolve conflicts. During couples therapy sessions, a trained therapist works with the couple to identify and address issues that may be causing tension or distress in the relationship. This can include communication problems, trust issues, intimacy issues, and conflicts over parenting or finances.

Through open and honest communication, couples can learn to better understand each other’s perspectives, strengthen their emotional bond, and develop healthier ways of relating to one another.

Couples therapy provides a safe and supportive environment for couples to explore and address their concerns and work towards creating a more fulfilling and harmonious relationship. Therapists may use a variety of techniques and interventions to help couples improve their communication skills, develop conflict resolution strategies, and build trust and intimacy. By learning to navigate their differences and challenges together, couples can deepen their connection, strengthen their bond, and create a foundation for a healthy and lasting relationship.

We see couples of all kinds.  We are LGBTQIA + affirming and specialize in polyamory and ethical non-monogamy.

Now Offering Couples Intensives!

couples

Couples intensives take the weekly sessions and compact them into one day of therapeutic work. Learn how to navigate conflict in a healthy way, learn about attachment styles and how they impact connection, learn about sacrifice and negotiation, fix communication errors, how to dialogue rather than argue, heal past wounds, and so much more. This intensive would not be appropriate for active domestic violence and might not be appropriate for recent or active infidelity. Those issues often take ongoing work. We would set up 1 free individual session for each person prior to the intensive to create goals for the day of work.

Packages come in two options. Half day (3 hours= 4 therapeutic hours) for $750 and Full day (6 hours= 8 therapeutic hours) for $1500. For full day, lunch provided.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on the here and now, emphasizing personal responsibility, self-awareness, and the importance of the present moment. Developed by Fritz Perls in the 1940s, Gestalt therapy is based on the idea that individuals have the capacity to self-regulate and make healthy choices when they are in touch with their thoughts, feelings, and experiences.

In Gestalt therapy, the therapist works collaboratively with the client to help them become more aware of their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, and to explore their patterns of relating to others and the world.

One of the key principles of Gestalt therapy is the concept of “unfinished business,” which refers to unresolved past experiences and emotions that continue to impact the individual’s present behavior and relationships. Through techniques such as role-playing, empty chair techniques, and other experiential exercises, Gestalt therapists help clients explore and process these unresolved issues in order to gain insight, closure, and personal growth.

By bringing awareness to their internal experiences and taking responsibility for their choices and actions, clients can develop a greater sense of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and emotional well-being through their work in Gestalt therapy.
